Transporting Fat: Lipoprotein Structure

The surface of the lipoproteins also contains cholesterol molecules, and proteins called apolipoproteins. Apolipoproteins are important in regulating lipoprotein function. They stimulate certain enzymes, and allow lipoproteins to be recognized by specific receptors. The core of lipoproteins contains triglycerides and cholesterol esters.

A circular structure with a phospholipid layer studded with cholesterol. Apolipoprotein appears along the surface. The core contains triglyceride and cholesterol ester.
