Salamander Limb Molecules

After amputation of a salamander limb, if the nerve that supplied the limb is removed from the stump of the limb, regeneration fails to occur.

Fgf2, a factor found in the nerve, is apparently necessary for salamander limb regeneration.

Furthermore, another factor, Fgf10, is thought to be necessary for the proliferation of the blastema cells that carry out the regeneration.
