Oxygen in the Body:

Introduction

Each breath we take draws air into our lungs and begins oxygen’s multistep journey through the respiratory system and circulatory system. The journey ends when crucial oxygen molecules enter cells in the body’s tissues to fuel aerobic cellular respiration.

Watch the animation to learn how differences in pressure drive the movement of oxygen through our bodies.

The body system that involves breathing. It takes in oxygen from the air and releases carbon dioxide. Includes lungs, airways, and muscles involved in breathing.
The body system that transports oxygen, carbon dioxide, waste, hormones, and nutrients around the body. Includes the heart and blood vessels.
A process by which cells convert glucose and oxygen into energy, carbon dioxide, and water. Takes place in mitochondria.
