Finding the Consensus Sequence

Published genome sequences of closely related viruses from the same family are used to generate a consensus sequence.

A consensus sequence is a way of showing the most common nucleotide at each position from multiple sequences that are similar enough to be aligned and compared.

  • Sequence 1: AATCGG
  • Sequence 2: ACACGG
  • Sequence 3: ACTCGG
  • Sequence 4: ACTCGC
  • Consensus: ACTCGG
