Shotgun Sequencing

An alternative approach to walking the DNA molecule in order is to “shotgun sequence” the DNA, that is, to break up the long DNA molecule into many smaller segments of random length.

Each DNA segment can then be sequenced in parallel, eliminating the time-consuming walk along the DNA and shifting the burden to a bioinformatics problem of determining where each segment belongs on the full DNA molecule.
