Species Range

The range of the African elephant is the entire area where the species occurs in the wild. Elephants are known to occupy a wide variety of habitats, from tropical forests to deserts. The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) gathers and analyzes data on many species including elephants. The IUCN does not carry out surveys – they compile survey data produced by other organizations, assess the quality, and estimate elephant range and numbers based on these data.
