Why Turn Down Genes?

Scientists have long been interested in the ability to turn down or shut off genes.

Observing the effect on an organism of shutting off a gene can give clues about the function of that gene.

The ability to turn down genes may also help in developing treatments for some diseases. One approach, for example, might be turning down production of a harmful protein.
