D. Protein Processing and Degradation

A diagram showing the lactase protein within a cell.
A diagram of a circle inside a larger oval. Outside the circle but within the oval is an irregularly shaped, two-part mass consisting of various multi-colored loops and spirals. The mass is labeled Lactase and marked with the letter D.

The amount of a protein can be reduced by reducing transcription and translation. But what about proteins that have already been made? If active proteins either are no longer needed or are damaged, they are marked for destruction.
