Med, Dental, and Vet Students Get Bench Time

Medical, dental, and veterinary students from 44 institutions across the country were invited to spend a year in a laboratory to hone their scientific skills and prepare them for possible careers in research, as part of a $4 million program.

As HHMI Research Training Fellows, 70 students will work in laboratories at a research university of their choice. Another 42 students will live in a refurbished cloister on the National Institutes of Health (NIH) campus and work with NIH researchers as HHMI-NIH Research Scholars. And for the first time in 2009, HHMI joined in partnership with the Ben and Catherine Ivy Foundation to support four HHMI-Ivy Research Training Fellows, who are studying the incurable brain cancer glioma.
