Now in its seventh year, the Exceptional Research Opportunities Program (EXROP) gives selected undergraduate students from groups underrepresented in the sciences or from disadvantaged backgrounds the rare chance to conduct summer research in the labs of HHMI scientists. The program is designed to encourage the students to pursue careers in science.

Is it working? The outcomes of a program such as EXROP can be hard to measure, but surveys of current and former participants reveal much to be proud of. Since 2003, EXROP has placed 359 students from 97 colleges and universities in the labs of 130 researchers. Of the students who have finished their baccalaureate degree, 93 percent are still in science, either teaching or pursuing an advanced degree.
