• Throwing away, turning over, or emptying containers that collect water
• Maintaining water circulation in fountains
• Changing the water in outdoor animal drinking bowls and birdbaths daily
• Adding chemical larvicide to drinking barrels

All of these strategies must be ongoing. They leave adults alive, and eggs can survive desiccation to hatch when they are re-hydrated.

There are also fish that eat mosquito larvae.
