The Howard Hughes Medical Institute is a private nonprofit that works to drive science forward. As a medical research organization, the Institute spends at least 3.5% of its endowment each year on research activities and related overhead, excluding grants and investment management expenses. At the close of fiscal year 2015, the Institute had $18.2 billion in diversified net assets. In the last 10 years, the Institute has provided almost $8 billion in direct support for research and science education.

This tiny feather-like sand flea leg was collected at a Chesapeake Bay beach. It was stained with dyes to highlight chitin in the exoskeleton and imaged with a confocal microscope.
