Paul Berg pioneered recombinant DNA technology and co-organized the Asilomar conference addressing safety concerns in genetic science. Winner of the 1980 Nobel Prize in Chemistry "for his fundamental studies of the biochemistry of nucleic acids, with particular regard to recombinant DNA."

Jim Watson co-discovered the structure of DNA with Frances Crick and Maurice Wilkins. He jointly won the 1962 Nobel Prize Physiology or Medicine for this discovery.
