The University of Texas-Pan American started its Regional Biotech Mobile Laboratory in 2006. The 40-foot bus is equipped with 12 workstations, each with its own laptop, a wireless satellite telecommunications system, and overhead LCD monitors to ensure a clear view of the teacher for all students. The mobile lab primarily serves middle and high schools within 20 to 30 miles of the UTPA campus, but it will travel as far as 65 miles east or west of UTPA on request. The UTPA mobile science education program includes protein quantification, gene expression, simulated HIV/sickle cell anemia tests, DNA forensic analysis, protein fingerprinting, water quality analysis, as well as DNA transformation, isolation, and replication.
