University of Pittsburg mobile lab

Established in 2008, the University of Pittsburg mobile lab is a hulking 70-foot 18-wheeler that houses 26 workstations and is emblazoned with the words "Science Rocks!" The lab travels to rural middle and high schools in Western Pennsylvania offering learning modules that cover genetics, molecular biology, and evolution. For example, "The Great Strawberry Caper" immerses middle school students in a scenario in which they are required to investigate a patent infringement claim made against an organic strawberry grower by a large commercial company. The young scientists use phenotypic analysis, DNA extraction, PCR, and gel electrophoresis to get to the bottom of the case.
