In 1998, the Boston University School of Medicine's CityLab program created the first educational mobile lab in the United States: a 40-foot bus called MobileLab. The bus, which serves the Boston area, is equipped with state-of-the-art laboratory facilities that can be used by up to 24 students at a time. Features include 12 workstations, a sink with both deionized and fresh water faucets, a -20*C freezer and 4*C refrigerator, and four stabilizers that automatically level the lab and keep it steady during use. Designed for 7th- through 12th-grade students, the curriculum incorporates techniques such as DNA fingerprinting, PCR, and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISA).
